The advent calendar for bag makers...

For day four we have two full metres of purple number five zipper tape. The same purple as the webbing in day 2 and now you can see that all the items so far are matching. However stay tuned as it’s not all purple in this box!

This zipper tape is a number 5 size, which is my favourite for both inside pockets and for the main closure on a bag.

Strong enough to last the test of time and not too thick for smaller pockets.

The colour is where the magic is. This shade matches so well with the other items inside the box so far –  the lavender webbing from Day Two and the purple- blue faux leather from Day One which means you can build a coordinated bag without trying. No mismatched tones. No digging through drawers hoping you have something that vaguely works.

You also get enough length to use it on more than one project. A main zipper for a pouch, an internal pocket on a crossbody, even a top zip on a small bag. People routinely underestimate how much zipper tape they will actually use and then run out halfway through a project which breaks their flow. This solves that before it starts.

day 4 of the 24 days of bag making - purple webbing

For those of you who may be new to zipper tape please don’t worry.

You can of course get fancy zipper jigs to attach zipper pulls but you really don’t need them.

I made a video here showing you how to add zipper pulls to zipper tape and a quicker reel here incase it helps.

Remember the zipper tape golden rules that I always go by:

  • Double sided (the sewing kind) tape is a must! It stops the tape moving when you sew and will make those beautiful straight zips you strive for.

  • Fuse the ends of the zipper tape once you’ve added your pull. I like to use a lighter – just show the tape to the flame (we’re not making bonfires here folks!), but you can also use fray check if you prefer (never the two together!!).

  • Basting the ends of the tape after adding your pull can be a good idea so you don’t pull your zipper pull off mid project!

Curious as to what the rest of the box looks like and don’t want to wait? You can watch the full unboxing below…

And pop back to this blog for the rest of the days or read along to the next blog post for what the next day brings!
