The advent calendar for bag makers...
Day 10 brings one of my favourite practical materials for bag making: waterproof canvas. If you have not sewn with it before, this is the perfect chance to try it. Once people use it, they usually wonder why they avoided it for so long.
Waterproof canvas gives you structure without the bulk. It is sturdy but still easy to sew, which means no wrestling your machine or battling with layers.
It holds its shape beautifully and adds a really professional finish to both the interior and exterior of bags. Many makers love using it for linings because it keeps the inside of your bag crisp, clean, waterproof and durable. Plus you don’t have to interface it!
It is also a great alternative to quilting cotton when you want a more robust, ready-to-go material that does not need interfacing in every single area. Less prep, fewer steps and a more polished look. What is not to love?
This particular base I call a Twill waterproof canvas as it has a slight weave to it – like that of twill cotton. It is a really unique base that I’m sure you will love to work with.
Including waterproof canvas in the 24 Days of Bag Making felt like a natural progression. We have already built colour, hardware and texture through the earlier days, and now you have a material that helps you bring all of that together in your next project. Whether you make a pouch, a tote or something more structured, this fabric gives you the confidence that the final piece will hold up beautifully. Plus having it in the same rainbow print means you can mix and match with day 1 and 5 and create a truly stunning bag.
Looking for tips on using this fabric? You will want to follow similar rules to faux leather. Do check out the tips on day 1 for more.
